Pelagos

One continuous dive through the whole water column — from the last of the light to the floor of the world. Four movements, no cuts. Scroll is the tether.

I
Movement I · Epipelagic · 0 – 200 m

The last of the sun.

Ninety percent of everything that swims lives in this bright, thin lid. Light arrives in columns, spends itself in ten thousand blues — and the sea practises its oldest trick: holding the sun still.

Temp 23 °C · The loudest blue

Movement II · Mesopelagic · 200 – 1 000 m

Blue, then the idea of blue.

Red is gone by two hundred metres; the water turns the colour of distance. Drifters keep the time now — slow bells of light pulsing a grammar with only two words: danger, and dinner.

Sunlight 1 % · Pressure 40 atm

Movement III · Bathypelagic · 1 000 – 4 000 m

The original dark.

No sunrise has ever touched this water — midnight here is not the absence of day. Something passes, four metres long, burning quietly in beads of cold fire. One animal. One sentence, written slowly.

Sunlight 0 % · Bioluminescence only

Movement IV · Abyssopelagic · the floor · 4 000 m

The planet is still working.

Heat climbs through cracks in the crust in slow grey breaths, and around every warm place — against all reason, without any sun — something is alive. The descent ends where the earth begins again.

Temp 1.9 °C · End of line
