Halcyon Instrument Co. · Sleep, as discipline

Hold the
night still.

Nocturne No.1 is not a lamp and not an app. It is a bedside instrument — machined brass, optical glass, and a low hum — that composes the light and sound of your room from dusk until morning, so rest arrives on time.

The instrument

Drag the night · hear with your eyes

A phone begs for attention. Nocturne does the opposite. One dial, one lens, no screen. Turn it at dusk and it lowers the room — first the colour, then the edges of sound — until sleep is the only thing left to do.

Inside: a full-spectrum optical engine, a felted acoustic chamber, and a clock that keeps observatory time. It never pings. It never updates. It keeps the night.

Built like an observatory

Tolerance ± 0.05 mm

We make one object a year, properly, instead of ten objects thinly.

Each Nocturne is milled from a single brass billet in Copenhagen, annealed, then hand-lapped so the dial turns with the resistance of a camera aperture. The lens is poured optical glass — the same houses that grind telescope eyepieces. The base is oiled American walnut. It is heavy on purpose: an object that stays where sleep happens.

“It feels less purchased than inherited.” — prototype keeper No. 014, Kyoto

Brass, unlacquered

Ages with your hands. Polishes where you touch, darkens where you don’t.

Poured glass lens

Full-spectrum, flicker-free. Dims to candlelight without colour shift.

Oiled walnut

Acoustically dead, visually warm. Felted beneath to silence the table.

  1. The light lets go

Amber falls from 41 to 4 lux over 28 minutes. Edges soften. A low brown-noise wash — like rain behind glass — covers the street, the pipes, the mind.

  2. Near-dark, near-silent

The lens holds at ember-breath: 0.6 lux, warm enough to find the door, dim enough to keep melatonin untouched. If you wake, it does not startle you.

  3. Dawn, before the window

Ninety seconds before your hour, a slow cool rise — 1,800 K to daylight — with faint birdsong filtered through felt. You open your eyes mid-morning, even in February.
