Halcyon Instrument No. 01 — Compline

We do not build apps for sleep.
We machine instruments for it.

Compline is a bedside instrument, milled from solid aluminium and finished by hand, built to draw your room from evening light down through true dark and back again — no screen, no subscription, nothing to open before you close your eyes.

01 — The Instrument

One object, tuned to the whole night.

Most sleep technology treats the night as a single event, lit by a single bulb. Compline treats it as a sequence: five movements between dusk and waking, each with its own colour, brightness and sound — read and conducted by the instrument itself.

  1. 01

    Optical Dome

A hand-polished glass dome diffuses light through 34,000 individually angled micro-facets, producing a glow with no visible source.

    2,700K – 4,000K · 0–100%
  2. 02

    Acoustic Chamber

A single full-range driver, sealed in a turned aluminium chamber, plays room tone rather than tracks — engineered for mass, not melody.

    40Hz – 18kHz · 19 profiles
  3. 03

    Presence Field

A capacitive field beneath the base senses when you reach for it in the dark, and dims the room before your hand arrives.

    ±3cm sensing radius
  4. 04

    The Wake Ring

One control: a knurled brass ring at the base. Turn it to set tomorrow's wake time — the instrument works backward from there.

    Single input, no app
  5. 05

    Machined Base

Turned from a single billet of aluminium on a five-axis lathe and weighted for stillness on the nightstand.

    1.9kg · Ø98mm

02 — The Craft

Built like an instrument, because it is one.

Every Compline is assembled by four hands in a daylight workshop above Zürich's old tram depot. Each body is turned, polished and tested individually; every dome is inspected under magnification for the single flaw that would let a line of light escape. What can't be made well by hand, we don't make.

Optical Dome

Hand-polished borosilicate, sapphire-coated for scratch resistance.

Tolerance ±0.02mm

Diffusion Ring

34,000 micro-facets, laser-etched into the dome in a single pass.

Etch depth 40µm

Driver Housing

Turned 6061 aluminium chamber, damped against its own resonance.

40Hz – 18kHz

Base Weight

A cast brass core gives the whole instrument a low, still centre of gravity.

1.9kg total mass

Final Assembly

Six hours, four hands, and one maker's signature engraved on the base of every unit.

№ hand-engraved

03 — Night Science

The night has a shape. We just perform it.

Sleep researchers have mapped the night into recognisable stages for sixty years. Compline is the first object that actually performs them — shifting light and sound through five movements timed to your own bedtime, refined night after night.

Philosophy

Sleep is not a problem to optimise. It is a discipline to keep — and it deserves an instrument as serious as the rest of the room.
