Precision sleep instruments · №1
The night, conducted.
Meridian is a bedside instrument that shapes the light and sound of a room across the whole of the night — from the last page you read to the first minute you are awake. Machined aluminium, hand-blown glass, one brass dial. No app.
01 / Position
Sleep is not an absence. It is a third of a life, spent in rooms lit and sounded by whatever happened to be there. We think the hours you don’t remember deserve the same engineering as the ones you do — so we build instruments, not apps: objects with mass, machined to tolerance, made to outlast the phone beside them by decades.
02 / The instrument
One object. Ten hours of work, every night.
Meridian stands 244 millimetres tall and does exactly two things: it governs the light in your room, and it governs the sound. Everything is set on the object itself, with a single detented brass dial. It has no screen, no microphone, and no opinion about your data.
- Body
- 6063 aluminium, turned from a single billet. Bead-blasted, anodised “nachtgrau”.
- Diffuser
- Hand-blown opal glass, Murano. Each numbered to its instrument.
- Light
- 1 800 – 6 500 K, flicker-free to 0.1 %. From 2 700 lumens down to below the perceptual floor.
- Sound
- Full-range 3″ driver in a sealed brass chamber, tuned so the source disappears into the room. 20 – 70 dB.
- Control
- One brass dial, 72 detents. Press to set, turn to shape. Nothing else.
- Connectivity
- None. It works alone, and it will still work in 2055.
- Mass
- 1.9 kg. It should feel like it isn’t going anywhere.
The clock is quartz, thermally compensated, and set once — at the bench in Copenhagen, before the instrument is boxed.
03 / One night, drawn
Ten hours, scored like a piece of music.
Drag through the night. The curve is light; the colour is what the room actually looks like at that hour.
DescentAmber dims below candlelight; broadband sound settles the room.
04 / Craft
Built as if it will be inherited.
The billet
Each body begins as 2.6 kilograms of 6063 aluminium and spends forty-one minutes on the lathe becoming 1.4. It is bead-blasted by hand, anodised in a grey we mixed for moonlight, and never painted. Scratches, if you earn them, go grey — not white.
The glass
The diffuser is blown by a two-person studio on Murano, in opal glass whose density we specified to the gram. No two are identical, which is why each carries the number of the instrument it was blown for. A broken one is replaced from the same furnace, for life.
The chamber
The driver sits in a sealed brass chamber tuned for near-silence — the hardest range a speaker is ever asked to work in. Below 30 dB, most drivers hiss, buzz, or vanish. This one holds a note you feel more than hear, and the street outside goes away.
