Instrument N°01 — The VesperEdition of 2,000

An instrument for the hours you won’t remember.

Vesper is a bedside instrument that shapes the light and sound of a room from the first dimming to the last waking — one continuous gesture, ten hours long, with no screen and nothing to check.

I. Position

Sleep is not a problem to be solved. It is a practice — and a practice deserves proper tools: objects that are quiet in the hand, unembarrassing on the table, and still working in twenty years.

Fourteen months of prototypes.
Four materials.
Zero notifications.

Vesper does not track you, score you, or send a report in the morning. It changes the room: the colour of the light, the floor of the sound, the slope between evening and day. What happens in that room is yours.

II. The night

The shape of a night.

Vesper runs a single ten-hour programme — a slow curve of colour and sound you set once, by hand, and then stop thinking about. Scroll, or scrub, to move through it.

21:00 Dusk

2,200 kelvin. The room settles to the colour of a late fire. Pink noise, barely there, takes the edge off the street.

III. Construction

Made slowly, in small numbers, from things that age well.

Fig. 1 — Vesper, exploded. Scale 1 : 2.
  1. 01

    Diffuser

Hand-blown borosilicate, acid-etched to a 0.3 mm frost. No two are the same cloud, so each is numbered to the body it was fitted to.

  2. 02

    Emitter array

Forty-eight emitters across five spectra, from 1,800 to 4,000 kelvin at a colour rendering index of 97. The ramp is flicker-free to 0.02 lux — dimmer than a candle at the end of the hall.

  3. 03

    Driver

A 60 mm full-range driver tuned to sit under the noise floor of a quiet room rather than on top of it. It plays pink and brown noise, rain, and three field recordings we made ourselves.

  4. 04

    Body

Solid 6063 aluminium, turned from a single billet, bead-blasted, and anodised in a warm graphite we spent fourteen months getting wrong. One knob: a brass detent every three degrees. Turn for level, press for scene, hold to silence the morning.

  5. 05

    Base

A down-firing passive radiator on a ring of natural cork, so the nightstand carries the low end and the glassware beside it does not.

IV. Specification
